A Christmas Carol (Ultimate Collector’s Edition)(B/W & Color)

Posted in Uncategorized by erifaet on November 15, 2008

Alastair Sim’s tour-de-force performance as the ultimate miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, has almost single-handedly made this beloved version of Charles Dickens’ story into one of the best-loved Christmas films of all time. Some of Britain’s best filmmakers united behind Sim, who was joined by a delightful cast of accomplished and acclaimed English actors; creating what many today believe to be the best and most faithful production of Dickens’ immortal tale. Cranky and curmudgeonly Scrooge learns the error of his unkind ways and is taught the true meaning of the holidays when he is visited by the ghost of his late business partner and the spirits of Christmas past, present and future. Bonus Features: Audio Commentary by Marcus Hearn & George Cole, “Spirit of Christmas Past” – George Cole remembers Alastair Sim, “Richard Gordon Remembers George Minter & Renown Pictures”, “Charles Dickens – His Life & Times”, Bonus Colorized Version, Original American Theatrical Trailer, Original British Theatrical Trailer, Before & After Restoration Comparison, Optional English & Spanish Subtitles, Optional Narrative for the Blind, Photo & Press Book Gallery, Cast Bios, “Scrooge” (1935 Seymour Hicks Version) Specs: 2-DVD9s; Dolby Digital 5.1; 86 minutes; B&W / Color; Aspect Ratio: B&W Restored Version – 1.33:1; Optional 16×9 Enhanced for Widescreen Monitors; Colorized Version – 1.33:1; MPAA – NR; Year – 1951; SRP – $19.99.

This is the desert-island choice of the many versions of A Christmas Carol, with a magnificent, full-bodied portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge by Alastair Sim that leaves everyone else in the dust. Lean and direct, this film’s version of the story wastes no time trying to impress viewers with the magical nature of the spirits’ visitations. Director Brian Desmond Hurst keeps the focus on Scrooge’s life story, beautifully simplifying and underscoring the theme of lost women with a haunting musical refrain from the folk song “Barbara Allen.” Sim’s commitment to the role is at times astonishing; his Scrooge’s Christmas-morning ecstasy is a marvel of giddy technique. Watch for Patrick Macnee (Steed in The Avengers) as the young Jacob Marley–the actor made his screen debut in this 1951 production. –Tom Keogh

Film (and Charles Dickens) fans won’t want to miss a single screen. The audio commentary by Marcus Hearn and George Cole adds depth and perspective to Sim’s amazing performance, and the groundbreaking special effects for the time. Cole also gives a homey remembrance of working with Sim during World War II and living in the English countryside to avoid the Blitz.

One of the most compelling extras is a short bio of George Mintner, the film’s executive producer who would go on to found his own successful distribution company, Renown Pictures. An unlikely film mogul, the British Mintner was shy and bookish, but managed to build a reputable mini-studio in the ’50s, out of the Hollywood limelight. He produced mostly B-movies, though after A Christmas Carol (originally titled Scrooge), he produced another Dickens adaptation, The Pickwick Papers. There’s a great mini-bio of Dickens, who grew up in the poverty that later fascinated him in his writings. Other extras include the colorized version (what were people thinking back in the ’80s?), cast bios, original trailers, and a features that more film companies might want to consider, an optional narration for the blind. Nothing is left out for film fans–God bless us, every one.–A.T. Hurley

Acheson: The Secretary of State Who Created the American World

Posted in Uncategorized by erifaet on November 15, 2008

The Secretary of State Who Created the American World

This is the authoritative biography of Dean Acheson, the most important and controversial secretary of state of the twentieth century. It is an important and dramatic work of history chronicling the momentous decisions, events, and fascinating personalities of the most critical decades of the American Century.

World Policy Journal editor James Chace has produced a balanced, intricate portrait of Secretary of State Dean Acheson, one of the chief architects of America’s foreign policy in the mid-20th century. Starting with Acheson’s childhood as a preacher’s son in Connecticut, Chace traces his subject’s rise through Yale and Harvard Law School (where he shared a house with several classmates, including a pre-Broadway Cole Porter), a two-year stint as Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis’s law clerk, and key roles in the Departments of Treasury and State under FDR.

But it was Harry Truman who, upon being reelected in 1948, rewarded Acheson with the offer of secretary of state, a position he took with some initial reluctance, protesting that he was not adequate to the requirements of the job at such a critical juncture in history. He proved himself wrong with his decisive role in the shaping of the Truman Doctrine and the NATO alliance, averting war with the Soviet bloc on the European front. But, as Chace shows, Acheson’s efforts were not as effective in China and Korea. And there were domestic problems as well; Acheson and his department were a particular target of the anticommunist witch-hunt even before Sen. Joseph McCarthy got in on the act. Chace’s richly detailed narrative is particularly effective in placing Acheson’s marginal role in the Alger Hiss affair in its proper context while highlighting Acheson’s personal integrity in the matter.

After 1953, Acheson remained an outspoken commentator on America’s foreign policy, frequently criticizing Eisenhower’s reliance on nuclear weaponry, and serving in an advisory capacity to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, the latter of whom took Acheson’s advice to get out of Vietnam to heart. Acheson even had occasion to advise Richard Nixon, who had accused the secretary in 1952 of heading a “Cowardly College of Communist Containment,” although he broke with Nixon after the president ordered the bombing of Cambodia. Chace’s account of Acheson’s life and career is as lively as it is intelligent, a well-crafted story that provides the reader with much insight into the unintended origins of the cold war. –Ron Hogan

Vanilla Beans & Brodo: Real Life in the Hills of Tuscany

Posted in Uncategorized by erifaet on November 15, 2008

Isabella Dusi, a native Australian, settled in Montalcino, a beautiful mountain eyrie famous for its wine and the proud nature of its inhabitants. Her acceptance into this close-knit community was a hard-won thing and has inspired Isabella to capture the true spirit of Montalcino. Vanilla Beans & Brodo tells of the violent history of this medieval village, which has lefts its mark on the character traits of the Montalcinese, and also offers a rare insight into the anxiety, joy, fun, and pressure of daily life as it unfolds with the seasons. An evocative story of the rivalry between village neighborhoods, of football fever and festival pageantry, Isabella Dusi destroys the myth that Tuscan villages are tranquil places, and instead reveals a life infinitely rich and full of dramas.

Slumdog Millionaire: A Novel

Posted in Uncategorized by erifaet on November 15, 2008

Vikas Swarup’s spectacular debut novel opens in a jail cell in Mumbai, India, where Ram Mohammad Thomas is being held after correctly answering all twelve questions on India’s biggest quiz show, Who Will Win a Billion? It is hard to believe that a poor orphan who has never read a newspaper or gone to school could win such a contest. But through a series of exhilarating tales Ram explains to his lawyer how episodes in his life gave him the answer to each question.

Ram takes us on an amazing review of his own history — from the day he was found as a baby in the clothes donation box of a Delhi church to his employment by a faded Bollywood star to his adventure with a security-crazed Australian army colonel to his career as an overly creative tour guide at the Taj Mahal.

Swarup’s Q & A is a beguiling blend of high comedy, drama, and romance that reveals how we know what we know — not just about trivia, but about life itself. Cutting across humanity in all its squalor and glory, Vikas Swarup presents a kaleidoscopic vision of the struggle between good and evil — and what happens when one boy has no other choice in life but to survive.

Lincoln and Lee at Antietam: The Cost of Freedom

Posted in Uncategorized by erifaet on November 15, 2008

It’s September 17, 1862 and President Abraham Lincoln needs a victory in order to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and end slavery in the South. But Robert E. Lee has other plans – invade the North. When Lee’s strategy falls into the hands of the Union Army, the result is the single bloodiest day in American history at the Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Battle of Antietam results in more casualties than the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Spanish American War combined. In fact, the bloodiest day of World War II, D-Day, amounts to only one quarter of the casualties suffered at Antietam. Narrated by Ronald F. Maxwell, director of the epic Civil War films “Gettysburg” and “Gods & Generals,” and written, produced and directed by Robert Child, “Lincoln and Lee at Antietam – The Cost of Freedom” vividly brings to life the story of America’s fight for freedom in a battle that changed the course of the Civil War. Through first person accounts, an original music score from Composers Steve Heitzeg and Nicholas Palmer and scarce Antietam commemorative battle footage from the 125th, 135th and 140th Antietam Reenactments, this film tells the tale of the 14-hour epic Battle of Antietam. Historical insight provided by: – James M. McPherson, Princeton University, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom” and “Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam” – Allen C. Guelzo, Gettysburg College, America’s only repeat winner of the Lincoln Prize; Nominated by President George W. Bush to the National Council of the Humanities – Dennis E. Frye, National Park Service (NPS) Historian at Harpers Ferry, author of “Antietam Revealed” and the Associate Producer of “Gods and Generals” – Patrick Falci, actor/performing historian portrays General Ambrose Hill at Antietam – Paul V. Chiles, National Parks Service (NPS) Historian at Antietam National Battlefield Park – Features Stanley Wernz, President of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, as Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Black as General Robert E. Lee Special Features: – 25-minute On-Screen Interview with Ronald F. Maxwell – Feature-Length Commentary Track with Writer/Director Robert Child and Narrator Ronald F. Maxwell – Original Music Score from Composers Steve Heitzeg and Nicholas Palmer – Trailers for: “EXPO-Magic of the White City,” “Gettysburg and Stories of Valor – CIVIL WAR MINUTES III,” “Johnstown Flood,” “Horses of Gettysburg – CIVIL WAR MINUTES IV,” “Winters of War,” “Civil War Life – Shot to Pieces,” “CIVIL WAR MINUTES – Confederate”

The bloodiest battle ever fought on American soil is thoroughly examined in Lincoln & Lee at Antietam: The Cost of Freedom, a worthy addition to anyone’s Civil War video collection. Directed and written by Robert Child and narrated by Ronald F. Maxwell (the director of the definitive Civil War epics Gettysburg and Gods and Generals), this straightforward, no-nonsense documentary emphasizes the tactics, strategies, and historical context of the battle at Antietam, in Sharpsburg, Maryland, on September 17, 1862. Further emphasis is placed on the wartime conditions (political agendas, ready status of armies, etc.) that led to President Abraham Lincoln’s orders to defeat Gen. Robert E. Lee’s exhausted army at Antietam. Lee and other Confederate strategists had hoped to stage a surprise invasion, but Lee’s battle plans fell into the hands of the Union army, and Lincoln’s victory–which was essential to his issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery–turned Antietam into the pivotal battle of the war. Although Child (who also directed Gettysburg: Three Days of Destiny) uses dramatic readings, maps, and photographs (especially the legendary battleground photos of Matthew Brady) in a manner similar to Ken Burns’ epic-length documentary The Civil War, the look and presentation of Lincoln & Lee at Antietam is entirely different, with many sequences involving contemporary Antietam reenactments. Many of the Civil War’s most colorful and important figures factor into this detailed 90-minute account, which clearly benefits from impeccable in-depth research. A 25-minute interview with Maxwell reveals the filmmaker’s massive 15-year commitment to bringing his epics to the screen, and his feature-length commentary with Child lends another layer of detailed information to this authoritative DVD. –Jeff Shannon

A History of the Kennedy Space Center

Posted in Uncategorized by erifaet on November 15, 2008

This first comprehensive history of the Kennedy Space Center, NASA’s famous launch facility located at Cape Canaveral, Florida, reveals the vital but largely unknown work that takes place before the rocket is lit. Though the famous Vehicle Assembly Building and launch pads dominate the flat Florida landscape at Cape Canaveral and attract 1.5 million people each year to its visitor complex, few members of the public are privy to what goes on there beyond the final outcome of the flaring rocket as it lifts into space. With unprecedented access to a wide variety of sources, including the KSC archives, other NASA centers, the National Archives, and individual and group interviews and collections, Lipartito and Butler explore how the methods and technology for preparing, testing, and launching spacecraft have evolved over the last 45 years. Their story includes the Mercury and Gemini missions, the Apollo lunar program, the Space Shuttle, scientific missions and robotic spacecraft, and the International Space Station, as well as the tragic accidents of Challenger and Columbia. Throughout, the authors reveal the unique culture of the people who work at KSC and make Kennedy distinct from other parts of NASA.
As Lipartito and Butler show, big NASA projects, notably the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station, had much to learn on the ground before they made it to space. Long before a spacecraft started its ascent, crucial work had been done, work that combined the muscular and mundane with the high tech and applied the vital skills and knowledge of the men and women of KSC to the design of vehicles and missions. The authors challenge notions that successful innovation was simply the result of good design alone and argue that, with large technical systems, real world experience actually made the difference between bold projects that failed and innovations that stayed within budget and produced consistent results. The authors pay particular attention to “operational knowledge” developed by KSC–the insights that came from using and operating complex technology. This work makes it abundantly clear that the processes performed by ground operations are absolutely vital to success.

Big Space Shuttle

Posted in Uncategorized by erifaet on November 15, 2008

This video from the wise Big Adventure series gives kids a great overview of the space program using simple graphics, a soundtrack featuring kids’ questions, and plenty of footage not seen on TV. The film follows one space crew through selection, training, and flight, providing some amazing facts about the mass of the space shuttle. Often the video goes on too long about specifics–reentry tiles, or the specific scientific experiments on board–but overall this kind of documentary has rarely been handled better. For ages 5 and up, but 3-year-old fans of space exploration will be happy to view the pictures. Parenting Magazine named it one of 1998’s best videos for kids. The Big Adventure series scans a number of fascinating subjects (airplanes, aquariums, and even renovations) and is a series to seek out. –Doug Thomas
